since i am a great lover of good fiction, i am wondering of there are
any recommendations for stories of the river. in particular, are there
stories, such as 'Deliverance' that have paddling as a certral part of
it? i have also read 'a river runs through it' and though i really
liked this, it took place near the river but not on it. any
suggestions?

Hang around any campfire near the Ocoee, New, Chattooga, Buffalo, etc,
etc and you'll hear plenty of paddling fiction. As you may know, the
river equivalent of "Once upon a time..." is "No ****, there I was..."
As to whether it's good fiction, I make no claims.

If you liked ARRTI, have a look at the article "Important Historical
Document Discovered By Chris Bell" in the Reads section of
http://www.eruditium.org/pete/.

Also happy to hear that you are a great lover, but let's keep the
conversation about boating here, shall we? :)

Sometimes truth is better than fiction.....
-----------------------------
The immaculate recovery (of the floating keycase)

Summer 2001 we took the family of one of our son's friends with us to the
East Race.

We'll skip to the chase... First, they are a family of 5 (Father, Mother,
and 3 sons between 7th grade and junior in Highschool). All were in a rental
raft, and except for the mother, all had been flung into the water at some
pivotal moment. The father had just climbed back into the raft when he
spotted his floating keycase in the waterway so he jumped back in to grab
the case that had come out of his pocket when he was thrown from the raft
the first time (I told them that everything should be attached to you...
nothing just in your pocket!). Rather than hanging onto the keycase, he tried
to toss it on the bank of the waterway. Trying to throw anything while moving
in fast water and going over obstacles is a mistake.

Unfortunately, his car had a computerized key for anti-theft purposes and
the floating keycase was nowhere to be found. A locksmith would be unable to
fix the problem.

We realized that we couldn't all fit in my van, so I said I'd take my family
and their mom and youngest son home in our van, and leave our oldest son there
with them and said I'd come back to pick them up after taking home the first
group.

The East Race is about a 2 hour drive so while they were waiting, they started
walking along the river, climbing down the banks at every chance, and about
two miles away, they found the floating keycase.

Someone had been living good!

One of the reasons that I became interested in kayaking was from reading a
book (non-fiction): Running the Amazon by Joe Kane

Both of Chris Duffs books are also very good.
"On Celtic Tides" describes his experience circumnavigating Ireland
"Southern Exposure" describes is trip around the Southern Island of New
Zealand.
