Default Ping: Herring, lens talk

The other day you were talking up the 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom-Nikkor,
which I agree is one hell of a lens, at least on paper (I've not seen
one.). Do you have one of these?

I looked up the specs and I was really interested until...
I looked at the weight. 45.9 ounces. Holy Arnold!

I have the 70-300mm f/4-5.6D ED AF Zoom-Nikkor, which is no match for
the lens under discussion in terms of speed, but...
It weighs only 18.2 ounces.

That's a significant difference when you are lugging a camera out in the
woods. The camera body itself weighs about 21 ounces.

By the way, check the NikonUSA pages for the camera battery recall. Some
EN-EL3 batteries "can experience a short circuit causing them to
overheat and possibly melt, posing a potential hazard to consumers."

The recall shows lot numbers for the batteries.

I have both. I bought the small (cheaper) one for the Disney cruise. I didn't
want to risk any salt spray getting in the big lens. You're right, it's a heavy
lens, which is why I also use a monopod when I'm using it. (Most of the time.)

Thanks for the info on the batteries.

If you haven't bought a flash yet, the SB 800 is great.
