OT--More news that didn't make today's news

What they carry, and what they choose to report on are two very different things. Yes, that's what editors do. D'oh. I used to do that, eons ago. For a while at the KC Star, my job as assistant to the world news editor, was to tear copy off the various incoming wire machines, and prep it for the world news editor to present at the three-times-nightly editorial budget meeting. At those meetings, each department learned of its news hole for the edition coming up, and would offer up what it thought was the best news stories to fill that hole. There was a brief discussion and usually consensus on what was "news" and therefore what was to be published. When I filled in for the world news editor, I did the presentations and was on occasion overruled by the Managing Editor. That's how the news biz works, fella. Most of the incoming news never made the paper, because there wasn't room for it. Isn't a UN resolution condemning Syria's role in the assassination of Hariri more important than reporting on Chuckie Shumer's personal opinion of Sam Alito? Chuckie Shumer is the John McCain of the left. Don't get between Chuckie and a microphone because you may end up in the hospital emergency room. |
