Default Gaskets for marine exhaust

When I replaced my manifolds and risers, the shop guys in the marina gave me a
tube of what they called "gasket glue". It's purpose was only to hold the gasket
in place while assembling the parts. It was *not* a sealant like Permatex, but I
don't remember the name of it.
