How to ID an engine

Hi all
how does one identify a Mercrusier engine?

A friend of mine claims that he has 502's in his Sea Ray

is there any way of taking the number off the engine and calling
Mercury Marine?

YES! Also should be an ID tag on the valve cover or near by.
