OMC Sterndrive
 

I am new to boating and have the chance to buy a boat with a OMC 175 Cobra
stern drive. I think it is a 1995 or 96 model.

1. Should I be concerned that OMC are no longer in business?

2. Is this motor a dependable motor.

3. Are parts readilly available.

Anyone with and suggestion would be appreiciated.

i don's know what engine they have on the unit, but the
cobra out drive was OMC attempt to copy merc stern drive

And the Mercruiser sterndrive was an attempt to copy Volvo's design
(that is why OMC had the spur gear vs. the gimbal shaft). Jim Wynne's design
(who was an ex-Keikeiffer Marine employee... Karl originally didn't like
the idea of an outdrive).

For a good story about the whole thing, read Keikeiffer's biography
"The Iron Fist". He was quite a character.
