Such a shame. But from what I see in a lot of areas around here, I'm
surprised it doesn't happen more often.

It is a shame. I blame a lot of it on the way they are advertised and
promoted, but where are the parents in all this? It's one thing for
25 year olds to run around in circles like a bunch of mindless bozos,
but 14 and 15 year olds?

Hard to say exactly what contributed to this accident. All the brief
report says is that there was apparently a collision. Doesn't say
anything about people running around in circles like a bunch of
anything - let alone "mindless bozos."

Only mechanical failure can keep the driver from falling into the mindless
bozo category. Some accidents are simply not allowed to happen. The opposite
indicates either intent or negligence.

One jet ski hit another jet ski. You can bet "Bozoism" played a part.

It's pretty easy to avoid collisions unless someone isn't on the ball.

In this case, what seems to have happened is that the 15 year old was
driving the 14 year old and they were riding alongside his 15 year old
sister on another jetski. One of them, I think it was the one with the
two boys but am not sure, swerved to avoid a buoy and hit the other
jetski. It was the girl's first time riding solo after taking the
boating course required to operate a jetski.

You have 3 young kids, all under the legal age of 16 for riding jetskis
in NJ, riding so close to eachother that they hit when when one swerved
to avoid a buoy. Ok, so they weren't running around in circles. But it
was still pretty mindless.

It's true, I guess, that there is a state of maturity whereby a jetski
can be operated in an un-bozo like manner. Logic dictates that it
must exist but I've seen no on the water proof yet. This will
probably rile some folks, but I consider PWCs to be a plague upon the
water and a plague on water sports in general. Most of the
restrictive ordnances that we are increasingly faced with, and blind
enforcement thereof, can be directly traced to mindless and unsafe PWC
operation.

Swimming with my kids at the island on Rogers lake as I have done for
years, now we got water mosquitoes running off the edge of the island
at about 20 yards out at a full 50 mph. Also noted at least 7
different drivers on two particular machines including what must have
been girlfriends and little brotheres and sisters, I seriously doubt
that all of these kids had the licence required in this state. Then of
course there was the guy who kept stopping in front of us to turn
around in a little circle till the machine kinda fizzeled out into a
drift and then gave it gas and left again... What's with that?

I wish I remembered where, in the past month, I saw a graph of auto accident
stats based on age group. It looked like an inverted square wave on an
oscilloscope. The 16-25 yr old group was the peak on the left, and the 65+
group represented the other side. The center was almost flat.

Based on this, what moron thinks a short safety course will turn 15 year
olds into people who can operate any kind of watercraft without an adult
breathing down their necks?

I can only speak from experience with my 14 yr old son and a few of his
14-15 yr old friends: They have the attention span of flies, and most of
their attention on the water is focused on girls at the moment. A buoy is
just an annoyance.

This goes against every fiber of my body, since I am a firm believer
in people being responsible for their actions, but perhaps one
solution is to introduce some sort of safty device on these PWC. Some
kind of govenor or speed restricter...

Not perfect, but probably a start...
