sailors sail; bathtub sailors argue politics (which has no meaning)

Its just a bunch of idiots trying to impress people. It doesn't work. And
then you have a few that change their address once in a while. I suspect
complaints caught up with them. Just keep updating your kill file.

John: yes, it is a nuisance, and as it's an unmoderated group, there's not
much we can do about it.

Your news reader program will have filters which you can configure to ignore
keywords or particular senders whom you find egregious.

But I find I can do a quick scan through the messages and pick out the few
boating topics which might interest me. I rarely even read the other stuff
(this message being an exception!). Responding to non-boating material, and
especially getting into contests of who said what when and are they really
an idiot, I find completely unproductive. Responding to those people in any
manner whatsoever only feeds them, and the only way to defeat them is to
ignore them. Sometimes this requires swallowing one's ego temporarily.

Outlook Express can mark certain threads as "interesting," and then I follow
those, and ignore any starting with "" if I didn't mark them at the
beginning of the thread. Then I only look for new thread topics. Very fast.

Type "newsgroup etiquette" or "netiquette" into a search engine, and all
your questions will be answered.

In the meantime ... how's your boating going? Do you have any one burning
issue you would like to present to the group? (I suggest a new, re-titled
thread for that.)

Charles

Forget the killfile. IP search 'em then send a complaint to their ISP
for off-topic postings.

What a wonderful idea!

ISPs are always _delighted_ to step in and police the behaviour of participants
in unmoderated Usenet groups! It's what they live for.

And please trust me: in the event you receive an answer to your complaint(s),
they most certainly will give it the attention it deserves.

Most sincerely,
W.T. Hatch

If you really are interested in controlling the excesses of usenet, then
support measurements that require all posts to contain within the
headers the actual name and actual ISP of the poster, except for those
newsgroups that deal strictly with the reporting of child abuse.

That will cut way down on all sorts of posts from posters who don't have
the cojones to use their real names and IP addresses, like "John Smith"
here.

Harry,
you using your own name and it has not reduce your obnoxious posts. You are
so ashamed of your behavior in rec.boats that you took offense when JohnH
said you are very similar to the person you present in rec.boats.
