21' runabout on Lake Michigan???
Staying at a resort on Rowley's Bay on the Lake Michigan side of Door
County. Is it reasonable or foolhardy to buzz around on Lake Michigan with a 21' runabout, exploring the islands? Or on the Green Bay side? I wouldn't go unless I had a radio - not sure about cellular coverage out there, or at least a float plan with the wife if staying near shore. Mitch |

Should be fine......just keep a weather eye and beware the shallows. Make

That's the sort of statement that makes me nervous, "beware the
shallows"... I have a depth sounder, but I've still had prop strikes when sounder indicates 6 feet deep. Should be fine......just keep a weather eye and beware the shallows. If I see 6' on my sounder I'd be reaching for the trim switch and cranking
the wheel to get out of there!!! Door County bottom is ROCK. Watch the chart and you should be OK. It's not as bad as people think. Nowhere near as hairy as the North Channel or Isle Royale. Depending on the sounder, the specific installation details of the
transducer, and the speed of the boat, the sounder may not always be believable. You must ALWAYS act as though the sounder does not exist. When you say to watch the map, do you mean a paper map or GPS? I've
got neither right not, other than my etrex suction-cupped to the helm. John H Agreed. Electronics are strange. I regularly fish in an area which, according to my anchor line, is about 8 feet deep. It's loaded with long, vertical weeds (aka "bass motel"). The sounder says it's 70 feet deep - same sounder that works beautifully everywhere else. |
