Gas for the MerCruiser

Hello all,

I am new to boating and also this newsgroup. I just purchased a 18 foot Sea
Ray Sport boat with a 3.0 L Alpha I MerCruiser I/O engine. Can anyone tell
me what grade of gas I should use? The suggested one in the owner manual
says at least with a octane level of 87. People are telling me difference
things, some say just to use regular, some say to use premium. Should I add
gas treatment into the gas tank too.

Another question is my boat trailer. How do I know its time to add bearing
grease into the bearings?

Another recommendation is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

David

I've used the cheap stuff in mine before without issue.
... though at all the docks up and down the river, the bring in the high
octane stuff....
never noticed much of a difference.

I've been boating for years and use regular gas most times. Sometimes I've
gotten premium by accident and didn't notice any different. I do use STP oil
treatment in my boat-adding it every time I change oil. Somewhere I read it
makes the oil stick to bearings etc. better and, since my boat sits for
periods without any use, I figure any longer lasting protection will prevent
wear when initially starting after these periods of inactivity.
You really need to check your bearings every year by pulling off the wheels
and hubs and physically examining the axles and the actual bearings, then
repack with good wheel bearing grease. Check again if you plan a long trip
with the trailer. Bob

Use the 87 as prescibed, and I suggest get yourself if you don't already
have them ... bearing buddys http://www.bearingbuddy.com/ to make trailering
safer ... imo

Good idea but check you trailer owners manual. If have a rubber cover over
the center of the bearing cup then you should carefully remove the rubber
and grease with a gun every time you put the trailer into water
(afterwards). The hubs that have the grease fitting can not be fitted with
a bearing buddy but if you have the metal cover over the bolt then you can
use a buddy. Make sure you use marine grease that states it can be use on
trailers.
