Windlass stops under load

Greetings folks,

I have a Simpson Lawrence Windlass which allows me to drop the anchor
without any issues, but it stops when retrieving the anchor line when
it meets any significant resistance (e.g. when the chain starts to
lift off the bottom of the river).

If I send it down again it rolls fine, but up there is barely movement
before it stops.

To diagnose this further and try to fix the issue, what steps should I
take? Does this sound like more like a faulty control switch, or an
issue with the motor?

Thanks for any advice and guidance,

Rich

Rich,
Sounds like it goes up and down but just has no torque. I would look to
see how the drum is attached to the motor shaft. I'm not familiar with how
Simpson Lawrence does it but the might be a keyway or a spline or perhaps a
sheer pin. If the issue isn't slippage between the motor and the drum it
sounds like the motor has a problem.

If the motor is running but the drum is slipping, the clutch pressure
needs to be tightened. If the motor is stalling out, check your
electrical connections. If all of the above checks out, you either
have a problem in the gearbox (very common), or a defective motor.

Hi Wayne, thanks for the response.

The motor seems to stall out - there is no continued sound from the
motor once the line stops moving.

Time to get out the multimeter . . . hope it's that simple.

Is there a circuit breaker that opens? It is possible that it is on a self
resetting circuit breaker and the breaker has gone bad.

Otherwise, the multimeter is the next step. Measure the voltage as close to
the motor as you can get. If the voltage drops real low, then check the
wiring and all the connections back to the battery.

If the voltage is okay at the motor, then I would suspect brushes. If you
can get the motor out, see if you can take it apart and change the brushes.
If the brushes are okay, then I would suspect a burned spot on the
commutator, which probably means a new motor
