Boat trailer plans
 

I own a 24' inboard powered cabin cruiser. I was wondering if there is a good place to get trailer plans to build a good trailer for this boat. It stays in the slip year round and considering I work on my own stuff rather than paying some over-priced marina to do the simple minded tasks. (They want to charge me $230 bucks just to pull her out and clean the bottom! Gimmie a break.) I would rather spend my money building my way out of slip hell. Any suggestions?

Do you have a place to store the trailer? It would be counter productive to build a trailer to avoid paying haulout fees and then paying even more to store the trailer!

For your use I would think that you would be able to buy a used trailer for less money then it would take to build one. If you weren't interested in towing your boat long distances you could get by with a fairly run down trailer that could be picked up cheap.

If your boat is a fairly common brand/style you may be able to borrow a trailer. I know lots of people who keep their boat in either a slip or dry stack storage and then have their trailer stored elsewhere. You might be able to just borrow a trailer when you need it.

Heck, offer to let someone use your slip while you use their trailer!

If you shop around for a used trailer you will probably spend a lot less.
Otherwise they are pretty simple, just take a look at the various ones
parked at your marina if you really want to build one.

Glen L sells trailer plans. Look at glen-l.com, they are sellers of
boat plans but have several plans sets for homemade trailers of wood
and metal if I remember correctly.

As others have said, buying one is probably a better choice.

However, we are just finishing building a trailer for our boat. The reason
is we could not find one to purchase that would have out boat set as low to
the ground as we wanted it to. If you still want to build your own trailer
I'd be very happy to share what I've learned from building ours. I designed
ours myself. It came our very well. So far there is only one thing I'd
change and even that is not a major problem.
