How many boats have a marine radio?

Hi,

I was just curious to find out how many boats have a marine radio. The
reason I fly volunteer patrols for the Coast Guard auxilary and having a
marine radio makes it much easier to provide help.

Thanks,

Jerry

My experience is:
Fresh water lakes, rivers, etc (except great lakes):
Only cabin cruisers will have them
Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, Great Lakes, large bays:
Only boats that don't have them are very small craft used back up in the
bays.

Of course this is not 100% but probably 95%.

Yes I have a VHF and sad to say I'm in the group that doesn't exactly know
all the do's and don't assocated with a marine band radio. Here at Humboldt
Bay, CA we mostly use them during salmon season on channel 68. They are
commonly used at Trinity Lake by the houseboats and those of us that have
them in our fish and ski boats. I had to use mine last year to hail the
Coast Guard for a tow back to the dock after my old 85hp Mercury crapped out
for the last time.

Where can I get one of those stickers we are supposed to have next to our
radios now, I think it's something to do with a Mayday call.

Thanks Mick

Dump "how to use your vhf radio" into Google.

The Truth is Out There.

I'm located at the mouth of the Saco River in Maine and our marina has some
thirty boats ranging from a 17 to a 42 footer, and every boat has one and
know how to use them. None of us would ever think of going out in the ocean
without one and that also includes GPS.

I have a pontoon boat on 60,000 acre lake and use a handheld. A friend that
also has a pontoon on the same lake has a permanent mount marine radio. I'm
sure we're in the minority.

and forty times an hour you hear, "Radio check. Come back. Radio check.
Anybody out there?".

I've never needed my PFD either, but I wouldn't go out without it on board.

Nothing is "safe", but one must live life and play the odds as best one can.

(same goes for safe boating courses)

I have a hand held, but it stays at home because I believe you can't
use it without a licence, here in Canada. Is this correct?

Maybe I should just stow it for emergencies, and face the concequences
later? The Coast Guard guys are pretty active here in the
Windsor/Detroit area.

I emailed the local Power & Sail club, they said they'd inform me when
a course was available ...... that was a year ago.

Anyone who goes further off shore than the driveway shold have one, And learn
how to use it! It isn't a CB, don't use it that way. Anyone who can afford a
boat can afford a radio.
Sailboat folks often don't turn theirs on, and therefore don't have to monitor
chan. 16 (emergency hailing and distress).

'Course they are more often then not the folk in need of help..(the engine I
haven't looked at in 6 months won't start, I have a line wraped around the
prop, I have no fuel,etc)
In short, everyone who might someday need help or wish to give help needs a
marine VHF radio.
It's easy to die out there guys, let's try to help ourselves.

Fair call, I like what you say.

Anypone prepared to comment on radio's in Canadian waters?
Could I legally turn on my radio and use it in U.S.A. waters, but
must turn it off when I cross the thin chalk line that divides Detroit
and Windsor?

Before you rip me a new one, my VHF radio lives at home and I take a
cell phone instead. I don't want to "Big 10-4.. Come Back!" a
freighter and jam frequencies that I don't have a licencse to legally
use.

I am familiar with the basic frequency use, can I legally carry a VHF
radio in my boat (in Canada) but have it turned off????

Here's a silly thought...... schools in the water regeions could spend
a few hours, over & above Latin, Shop & Community Service, doing a
basic water etiquite & safety course. Think about it,.... the kids
could teach their parents something. And while I'm at it, even though
we're nowhere close to a farm, I would encourage my kid to learn the
basics of farm safety, or any form of safety for that matter. I
realise that it's a parents job to teach safety, but sometimes we
don't know all the answers (e.g. How many people are killed because
Dad needed the 9 Volt battery out of the smoke detector?).

Safety, Enviroment, Fun ...... in that order?

Derek I live in Windsor, and courses are available, you just have to sign
up. If you want I can get a contact name for you, let me know and I can
email it to you. I had the Coast Guard on my boat 2 weekends ago for a
volunetary safety check, it's no big deal if you have the VHF radio on board
if you don't have a licence. Even if you intend on just getting weather
forcasts. I'm sure you'd rather have it if there is a problem.
