securing an outboard motor
 

This may be a dumb question, but when I buy my boat, I'm planning on
storing in an open lot. Obviously, I'm concerned about theft. It
would seem to me that removing an outboard motor is probably not too
hard to do. Is there some kind of locking mechanism that helps
prevent theft?

I just use a padlock though the holes in the mounting clamps.

Don't know how big your motor will be...
I bought a 4 pack of brass padlocks keyed alike. One goes on the
tightening screw levers of my 6 hp Evinrude Yachtwin.
Boat dealers will have a special channel bar type of lock for this
purpose also.

Lowes or Home Depot has everything you need.....15 feet of heavy duty
galvanized chain secured through the outboard frame mount and weaved through
the wheel of the trailer.....then locked with a heavy duty padlock. This
secures the outboard, boat and trailer.

Not theft proof but theft resistant. ;-)

You can also get special "anti-theft-paint" to match your boat's paint
scheme. It comes in spray cans from your local auto parts or hardware
store, in thousands of colors. I also etch each major component (block,
lower unit, cowl) in visible, and if possible hidden locations with "Stolen
From ...town, state, phone number..."

If you give a thief a choice between a shiny new motor, with original mfrs'
graphics, and a badly painted, unique motor, with contact info permanently
inscribed, which will he take?

A padlock is easily cut as I found out the hard way.

If you use a kicker bracket take a good look at its assembly. Some are very easy
to take apart.

That's what I did until a thief cut it and stole my motor.
