OT (way OT): Krispy Kremes

Wait! I know how to make this on topic. Do you ever start your boating day
with Krispy Kremes?

Krispy Kreme donuts are a relatively new item in my part of California.
I'm watching _That 70's Show_ and a box of Krispy Kreme donuts appears.

Have Krispy Kreme donuts been around a long time east of California (that's
my guess) or was it out of place as a 1970's stage prop?

I used the word prop, so this really is an on topic post; really, it is.

While visiting a city some years ago that I now seem to remember as
Atlanta, we dropped in on the original Krispy Kreme Store. There were
old photos on the walls of the early years of the joint- and based
strictly on a quick glance at wardrobes, etc, in the crowd scenes I got
the impression that the photos dated from some time between the late
1930's and the early 1950's.

We had several of them open up in the Seattle area within the last few
years.
Can you spell "phizzle"? For the first few months there were traffic
jams at the first location. People would wait in line for 2-3 hours to
buy donuts. (!)
If you drop by any of their locations today, you might easily be the
only guy on the premises. I stop at Krispy Kreme once a month, as there
is a location just a couple of blocks from the bulk mail unit where I
do a major mailing.
This used to be a pretty good gig, as they were always running the
donut machine non-stop and would pass out a free, piping hot, glazed
donut to everybody walking in. Voila', buy one of their surprisingly
decent coffees for a buck and a half and wind up with coffee *and* a
donut.

Alas- last week the donut machine was shut down. The free samples
consisted of sliced up sections of some day-old chocolate donut, (pass,
thanks), but the buck and a half coffee was still pretty good. Skeleton
crew on duty. I know a business that's about to tank when I see one,
and too bad.

After the glamor wears off, people discover that a Krispy Kreme is just
a donut.
Better than average donut, maybe, but Krispy Kremes are only truly
outstanding when they're hot and if you eat one every day you'll be fat
as a house in no time at all. :-)

Gotta hand it to some marketing genius, however; just when America is
getting all health conscious and worried about cholesterol and blood
pressure, just when Winchell's and other donut chains are going the way
of the Passenger Pigeon, some guy figures out how to relieve thousands
of folks of their life savings to put them into new Krispy Kreme donut
franchises.

Krispy Kremes started in NC in the 30's.

PS: The real money to be made recently in the Krispy Kreme business has
been in shorting the stock. Was selling for $40 as recently as March
'04, now down to $6. Ouch. Turn the "hot" light *off*.

Half of the Canadian franchises just went belly up recently. 'Tim
Horton's' has the market cornered here....although I don't know why.
Ever since a good 'ole boy from Nova Scotia sold the company to the
Wendy's hamburger people, the donuts aren't even produced locally here
anymore.
The quality has 'gone south'.

Now just a dern minute there, John!! I've lived my whole life here in DD
country, and while we don't know much about Indians, we can recognize war
talk when we hear it!

Now, I admit that DD kinda lost their soul when they went to regional
bakeries, but their coffee is still the most popular hereabouts. I noted
Chuck's earlier comment about how good the KK coffee is -- you won't find
much agreement on that in this area, but its unsurprising coming from a
place that thinks Starbucks is the center of the universe. :-)

There are a few places in eastern Mass where DD and KK are neighbors, and it
was common for a while to see folks get their donuts at KK, then pull
through the DD for coffee. It didn't take these cagey New Englanders long
to figure out, though, that KK are just plain old donuts that are hot and
overloaded with sugar, and the fact is that *any* donut is delish when warm,
but only KK's turn inedible when cooled. Those of us old enough can
remember buying donuts from DD still warm and coated with a *real* honey
mix. Most of th KKs around here are in the death throes described elsewhere
by Chuck.

Good old KK - Back in the 60's in Birmingham my buddies and I would
stop by KK after dropping off our dates and get fresh donuts right off
the conveyor, dipped in chocolate and served on a plate. A few of
those and a glass of milk would sober you right up. Can't get better
than that when fresh and hot but don't care for them cold.

Microwave day old donuts?

There is so much wax in that frosting, the damn things will
explode!!! :)

I never buy them to bring home! Get the cup of coffee and 2 donut deal.
Eat them, and do not get donuts for another 6 months. They taste good
that way, and is semi healthy by not over eating sugar and wax.

What does wax have to do with a donut? I made donuts at Winchells's in San
Antonio a few decades back, for a couple of weeks, and I don't recall wax
being on my list of ingredients.

Krispy Kreme donuts suck.

C'mon Shortwave, tell us how you really (or is it relly) feel about Krispy
Kreme donuts. ;-)

This thread gave me a good laugh. Apparently, there is no topic,
political
or otherwise, that doesn't merit intent discussion on this ng! I expected
one or two replies, not 10 or 20. :-)

Now what's wrong with Krispy Kreme's?

Other than the fact that when they are cold, they turn into sugared
hard tack? You ever see one after twenty four hours or so? Might as
well stick your face in a bowl of sugar and just suck it up.

And they, like DD I might add, use wax in their frostings to get them
to shine nice and pretty.

Who's donuts get your vote?

PJ's in downtown Putnam. Fresh, has both varieties raised and cake
and keeps the numbers down and bakes from 4 AM to 10 AM. The donuts
are moved from the case at noon and given to a local shelter. They
aren't overly sugared and the frostings he uses are very light and
tasty.

Another choice is Cinnamon Tree at Windy Acres in S. Woodstock, but
they are hit and miss as they only do two or three varieties a day and
keep the volume down.

Thanks for sharing! You also answered the wax question for me. I know the
donuts I made didn't have wax as an ingredient, but I can't say I have any
idea what was in the frosting (didn't make that from scratch).

Exactly one of the reasons Krispy Kreme is having a hard go of it now.

Tom, states they use wax additives to make shiny chocolate. Just an aside
for him. I don't eat chocolate donuts. The chocolate always tastes phoney.

My favotite donut was a cake version covered with white coconut.
Of course, that's the one Tim Hortons decides to drop.
Once a season I drop into a Robin's Donuts and get one.
I have at least four Tim Horton's franchises and one Robins within
walking distance of my house but I very seldom go there.

Not in Wisconsin!

Any donut you eat has wax and the solvents to go with it.

Like jelly donuts?

BBBAAWWWAAAHHHHAAAA!!! :)

I like raised, glazed donuts. Jelly donuts have always set my teeth on
edge, so I do not eat them. Best donuts were at Ortman's on Fairmont Ave,
in El Cerrito when I was growing up. $0.06 for donut and a real ice-cream
shake for $0.32.

Wax (parrifin [sp?] is added to lots of chocolates.....it makes the
chocolate easier to work with........easier to mold...etc.

I am 62. Inflation was an unacceptable 3.5% when Nixon instituted wage and
price controls. The real excalation of prices did not occur until after
Nixon left. Up until that time, all amendments to a spending bill had to be
germane to the bill. He agreed to the rule change as part of the exit
package. Then Congress (Democratic Party controlled at the time) went to
court and got a ruling that any money bill passed, required that the money
be spent. Up until that time, the Executive branch did not spend all the
money allocated. Got rid of a lot of the pork projects. My $1mm house was
sold new, without pool and addition for $36.5k in 1972. That 17% inflation
during the Carter years, yields a doubling of prices in about 4.2 years.
(rule of 72) We had good penny candy in the 1950's. The donuts were that
price when I was a junior in highschool and I graduated from HS in 1961. If
you were a teacher, you were one of those that did not teach the students
anything worhwhile about finances.
