Stringer outdrives

I got to looking at those old boats I picked up the
other day - the outdrives look as if they are still
serviceable, but I've been told parts are hard to
find for them. I've looked around the web and
while there seem to be parts available, I'm not
sure I'm looking at the right outdrives.

So, if these two boats are in the '72/'74 range
for age, and they have OMC outdrives, the I
can assume they are Stringer outdrives?

Thanks for any help.

Later,

Tom

If they are OMC stringer drives, than the engine would be mounted to the
floor and those stringers are probably rotten. The lower unit does not
transfer the hp to the transom, the torque goes through the engine and its
mounted to those stringers on the bottom of the hull and thats what pushes
that boat. Those OMC drives are probably also electric shifts and that
probably also will be your problems or that spider transmission joint.
You will learn all about it pretty quick.

They are OMC stringers on both boats - the Glastron
and the Chris Craft.

Actually, the stringers are in fairly good shape, although
I understand what you are saying. It's part of my decision
as to what I want to do - junk the Glastron and sell the trailer
it's on and restore the CC or try to salvage both boats.

I didn't know about the electric shift thing - that's pretty
interesting. I have one that is off the Glastron that I picked
up with the Chris Craft and was looking it over - it doesn't
look that complicated, but when you look at the schematic
(I found one on the web) it becomes somewhat more of a
challenge.

Are there manuals around for these outdrives?

Thanks for the info.

Yes, there are service manuals available. I purchased one through ken cook
company or something like that, If your near me I can let you borrow it, it
covers I think about 5 engines and they are pretty much the same. I redid
the stringers on one of mine, it wasn't that difficult. Did it in about a
weeks time, just remove the engine, cut out the old stringers, replace the
wood, then glass the hell out of it. Cut some holes for water draining. Let
glass dry a few days, paint it and your sailing.
Those electric shifts are fairly easy to change the coil spring, there is
this little ear that keeps breaking on them and then you lose the forward or
reverse. Those things are pretty expensive also, find some aftermarket
place, I think OMC wants near 400 dollars cdn.

good luck
