Hey guy - help a brother out?

The above picture is some rigging on the starboard side of the boat -
what is this used for - any idea?

Also, in this picture, I assume this is for the jibs right?

Can't help you Tom but I would suggest you tank that bottle of New Finish
(pic 2) if you want to keep the exterior looking good.. ;-)

The first picture shows some blocks leading aft from the vicinity of
the mast, ending up at a cleat. Question is, what are they used for?
Difficult to say with out knowing more about how the boat is rigged out
and the sails. Frequently that kind of setup is used to bring halyards
aft to the cockpit or some other sail control like a downhaul, outhaul,
boom vang, etc. Also possible but less likely in my opinion is that
they could be for jib sheets.

The winch in the second picture is almost certainly for the jib sheets.

halyard: raises sail up the mast and holds it in position.

sheet: controls lateral position of sail (trim).

I've never sailed on the Halman or Nordica, but in your number ****4
photo I'd guess your jib sheet might use that block.

In the first photo...I'd have to go look at a Halman and see if they
have the same setup as yours. Sorry.
I believe in that url I passed along there might be some owners to
contact that would be a good resource for you.

What the????
I looked at the Nordica/Halman site and there was your boat. You didn't
waste any time getting aquainted with that group.

Ah, and here I thought you were 'Da Man. :)

I'll check them out - thanks for trying.

Sorry...I'd only be guessing.
Now if you want information on the 'Sandpiper 565', I have the original
'Rigging Manual'.

Really? I was there this just five minutes ago and didn't see it.

Where on the site?

Isn't that you down at the bottom of the 'projects' page?

Well, when I buy a Sandpiper 565, I know who to call.

I've been through all the pics on the Nordic/Halman site and I can't
find anything topside that looks like this. I wonder if it's related
to the main sail in some way - maybe for single handing raising and
lowering the main sail?

Quite possible. A number of Sandpiper sailors modified their rigging to
include blocks at the base of the mast to lead the halyards aft to the
cockpit. I'll be doing same by next spring. With the standard rigging
you have to stand at the base of the mast to raise/lower the main.
Awkward when singlehanded.

Sorry, I've been away and didn't see this thread.

You mean the pulleys (blocks) and cleat on the cabin top? If I had to
guess, it's either for the main halyard to be led aft, or for a reefing
line (although if the layards isn't led aft, it makes no sense to lead
the reef line aft).

If you're talking about the squarish thing on the deck just aft of the
shroud chainplate, I don't know. Clearly, it's main function is to trap
dead leaves & pinestraw, but can't see it clearly enough to guess what
it's *supposed* to do.

Yes, that makes sense. It doesn't look like the sheet will run from
there to the winch, though. You might consider getting a low cut genoa
so as to not have to put the block that far aft aft. They sail better
anyway... just pay a little extra for a window in the sail so you can
see where you're going!
