Alternator question.

Since a couple of weeks my alternator light is flickering on (more ON
then OFF). It does seem to charge the batteries. I read somewhere that
switching the ignition key off while the engine is running can cause
this. (My 7 year old :-( did this).
I have a 35HP 3 cylinder Volvo-Penta diesel MD17C.
Is the alternator gone or perhaps the regulator?
Anybody has experience with this?

Thanks,
Ronald.

This is commonly caused by worn brushes making intermittant contact with
the slip rings.
