At sea GPS tracking

Does anyone know of a system I can purchase where I can go to sea with
two ships, put a tracking device on it and track it's movement on the
other in blue water. I know of a few companies that provide GPS
tracking but it's coastal. THanks in advance..

If you have an amateur radio license it would be easy. There is a system
called APRS which hams use. It works well with laptops. You hook a GPS
to a device called a TNC (terminal node controller) and that connects to
your VHF ham radio. About once per minute or so the radio will transmit
a data burst which includes it's position according to the GPS it is hooked
to. You and anyone else with this equipment can track any number of
boats, and there is map display software also.

Google or Yahoo information on APRS and also things like GeoCaching.
You may like what you see.

You can get several classes of Ham license now without much testing
(sad to say) and use this APRS equipment.
