Navico Tillerpilot 1600 Manual
 

Hi. I have a Navico TillerPilot 1600, but I don't have the manual. Does
anyone know where can I find it?

My first tillerpilot was a Navico 1600. I still have it in its original box
and the manual may be on board my sailboat.

I have used it for several years and spent countless dollars on repair.
I have learned how to repair that thing with both of my eyes closed during
the worse storm.
The last time it came out of repair they forgot to place the protective
shield to prevent electro magnetic interference. So every time I used my
VHF the tillerpilot went wild.
The main problem with this tillerpilot is that it is not waterproof and has
no breathing hole.
My present tillerpilot is still a Navico but with a breathing hole and
proper EMI shielding.
I still have the manual for the 1600 and next time I go on my boat I will
look up in my manuals. My recommendation is do yourself a favor DO NOT USE
THAT THING for serious navigation. As to repair it, open the case and let
the inside component dry up. Then try it. Changes are that it will work
until it gets humid inside and stop again. If some of the components need
replacing unless you can have them at low cost do not spent money on it.

I have a copy of a water stained Navico 1600 Manual.

It is yours for the asking (I converted it into PDF format and is about 3.4
M in size.

My problem with this Tiller Pilot is that it seems to only like a beam
reach, 30 degrees off the wind and calm seas. I have tried it a few times in
Buzzards Bay, andhave been very disapointed. It's "failure" mode is to keep
hunting until the "actuating arm" unscrews itself frm the drive mechanism
and falls out.

My sailboat is a Hunter 27 and itself does just fine in 4 - 6 oot seas, but
anything over 2 feet and the Navico is problem. The problem with this
Hunter is that it does have a tendency to round up but I don't understand
why this should be a problem with the Navico? Perhaps the internal compass
gets confused?

Any other comments / experience with the Navico 1600 Tiller Pilot?

and falls out. Replacing it was a problem until I put a rounded chamfer on
the threaded end of the SS actuating rod.

Bob,
I have just acquired a Navico Tillerpilot 1600
and am trying to install it on a Catalina 25.
If you still have the manual, could you email me a copy of the file? If I
can get it to work it will see light duty on a small lake. Two previous
owners could not get it to work so it may have some issues. Seems to
vibrate a lot
but I need some basic setup/installation instructions.
Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks.
