Whats the difference Alpha 1 with the 4cyl or 6cyl

Hey all I was at the boat shop today drooling over the new SeaRays (so bad
that I had to change my shirt when I got home). I noticed that the 3.0 litre
had the same outdrive (alpha 1) as the 4.3 litre. Do the outdrive differ
internally or do they use the same gearing and all, and just change the
prop? Just curious
Thanks
Steve

Depends on the boat and manufacturer. Component wise, they are the same.
However, they may or may not have a different gear ratio in them. Depends
on the weight of the boat and how they are setup. In general they tend to
use the same gear but not always.

Those are the "standard" ratio but each boat manufacturer can get several
different ratios from Merc. If your talking the same boat w/ the 4.3 or the
3.0 then this is probably true. If your talking different boats I would not
make that assumption. On a heavy 20' boat w/ the 4.3 you may very well find
the 2.0 gear.

Thanks for all the replies, one last question, are the gears different in
the lower unit? or are the gears in the upper unit the ones that are
different
Thanks again
