Thru-hull or transom mount transducer

Which will be more reliable, thru-hull or transom mount for a depth sounder?

I have a choice for the 20 footer we just bought.

Which would you suggest?

I've never had a problem with my transom mount, unless I knocked it out of
alignment while washing the boat. But it's easily straightened out again. If I
had to do it over, I'd go with the transom mount.

I am leaning towards the transom mount. The only thru-hull I had was on my
32 footer (depth sounder). All the others had transom mounts with no
problems.

I bought a Faria with the 'shoot thru hull' transducer. I posted the
question here if it would work through my fiberglass hull with it's
3/4 inch plywood filler. Everyone said no it wouldn't. Well I silicone
glued the thing into my hull right near the bilge pump, and sat a brick
on top of it to squish the air bubbles out of the glue. Let the glue
setup for 2 days. It works perfect. My local lake goes to exactly 100
feet, and that is exactly what the display says. The unit is supposed
to work to 200 feet, but I don't have anything that deep around here.
I look at it like this, if it's deeper than 20 feet, I don't care how
much deeper because there is no chance in hell I'll kill my stainless
prop anyway. I do find readings up to 50 feet useful if I will be diving
from my boat however. I would never go to an 'external' transducer
for depth only, but external is a must for a 'fish-finder'.

Thru hull for a depth sounder. It's so much simpler than drilling holes in
the transom.
