rearview mirror

Do I want a rearview mirror for my boat?
It seems like a good idea to see the folks I'm towing while I'm watching
traffic in front, but I don't see any boats with rearview mirrors.
What's the scoop on this?

Thanks

It's just one more thing to get in the way of fishing poles and ropes, or to
get broken when the boat's rocking and you think it's solid enough to grab
onto. When towing people behind the boat, you really should have another
person in the boat with you.

I do have a spotter on the boat; it's the law here. I was thinking it would
be easier to keep an eye on the kids when they are being dragged behind the
boat on the tube (not the skis or wakeboard) so that I know how my steering
is effecting their activity. It seems reasonable, but the absence of
mirrors made me wonder; maybe everyone who tried one quit after breaking it
as you suggest.

If you are water-skiing or towing someone, you must have either a spotter OR
a rearview mirror. Check your local regulations. Common sence says that
you are better off with a spotter, but if it is a weekday, no one on the
lake, just two of you and you want to water-ski - you just may wish you had
a rearview mirror.

Who said I try to avoid running over jet skiers?

William Andersen August 25th 05 11:11 PM

California requires a spotter - no exceptions.
I use a mirror but the mount interferes with the convertible top, so we have
to take it off to put up the top and get some shade. I have wing mirrors on
each side, just like my cars. they're pretty nice, too.

I know my local regs require a spotter; I don't know if a rearview mirror is
an acceptable alternative. I'll have to dig into that.

Ah, the first real vote for a mirror. I have a bimini so it won't interfere
with mounting a mirror.

William Andersen August 25th 05 11:18 PM

I use a mirror so that I can see what's going on. I don't intend to imply
that my using the mirror replaces having a spotter. It doesn't. A spotter is
another person who is responsible for watching the person in the water.

Get one that applies to the inside of your windshield with suction cups.
When you don't need it, take it off.

Even with a spotter it is a good tool to have when towing someone in a tube,
on skis or a wakeboard.

I agree, where I like to water ski, there is ALWAYS people and I WILL NOT
use just the mirror with other boaters around. But sometimes during the
week in the big part of the lake before the waves kick up, I will ski with
just my wife driving.....

I have a convex metal mirror that attaches to the windshield top rim on my
Sea Ray. I use it in addition to the spotter so I can see some of the
action. It is easily removeable when not towing a skier. It doesn't even
interfere with my tight-fitting roof.

I don't know of any tow (ski) boats, that don't come with a mirror, but
you're right...I don't see them on anything else.

Here in Ohio, its not required, as the law dictates have a "third" spotter.
With a spotter, the driver should be driving...not looking at the skier.

However, in other states (like KY) a spotter is not required when pulling a
skier, however, a rear view mirror is.

Mounting a mirror can be tricky too. They are larger than auto mirrors, and
since the bow angle changes on a boat, there is a visibility issue, so keep
that in mind.

Good luck.

Good advice. I don't start any maneuvering until the boat starts to plane
so I'll set the mirror for that angle. Thanks.

I have to agree. They make some very large parabolic mirrors, and they do
help you keep up with the other boaters, especially on the busier lakes.

Here is a great example of these large mirrors.
