I had a Tanzer 22 that had a cast iron keel, and tried several approaches
before finding the right approach that lasted over 15 years with only a
minor touch up every so often. The problem with cast iron keels is that
you need to put a serious epoxy layer over it once it has been sandblasted
clean to seal and protect it from the sal****er and copper-based antifouling
paint.

Interlux sells their Interprotect 2000e/2001e product that works well in
this application. They have a web site (www.yachtpaint.com) that gives
details on the procedure to protect cast iron keels. Take a look at

Note that you need to start covering the newly sandblasted keel almost
immediately. Also, pay attention to the Interprotect re-coating times so
that you can put additional coats on without having to sand the surface
between coats.

I used the optional primer wash step as my first coat.
