Woman Drowns While 'Teak Surfing' On Lake Tapps
August 22, 2005 By KOMO Staff & News Services SUMNER, WASH. - A 22-year-old woman drowned after going boating with friends on Lake Tapps, officials said. The Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office identified the woman Monday morning as Jenda Jones, of Sumner. She was pronounced dead Saturday evening after she was found by Pierce County sheriff's deputies in the Tacoma Point area and rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup. Jones and another woman were "teak surfing," hanging onto the shelf at the stern of a boat as the motor was running at a slow speed, when she let go and slipped beneath the surface, sheriff's Sgt. Jerry R. Bates said. She apparently was the water 30 to 40 minutes before she was found and was not wearing a life vest, Bates added. Past cases of teak surfing have resulted in injury or death when riders fall unconscious after breathing carbon monoxide from a boat's motor. Investigators are awaiting toxicology results to determine whether carbon monoxide was a factor in Saturday's drowning. |

Comment on this accident from the Coast Guard: Office of Public Affairs U.S. Coast Guard Thirteenth District Boating Safety Alert Date: August 22, 2005 Contact: Dan Shipman 206-220-7257 COAST GUARD, MARINE LAW ENFORCMENT AGENCIES STRONGLY DISCOURAGE "TEAK SURFING" SEATTLE - A 22-year old woman was killed Saturday while "teak surfing" or "platform dragging" on Lake Tapps, Washington. This accident has all indications of a Carbon Monoxide-related fatality. Teak surfing, also called platform dragging, occurs when a passenger hangs onto the rear of a boat to be pulled through the water until the boat's wake builds enough height to allow body surfing. This pratice is extremely dangerous becuase surfers are within inches of the boat's propellers and the vessel's exhaust ports. Surfers typically do not wear lifejackets when engaged in the practice. National studies have found Carbon Monoxide concentrations at a small vessel's stern swim steps to be as high as 40-to 80-thousand parts per million. Concentrations as low as 200 parts per million can be fatal. Anyone exposed to a high concentrations of Carbon Monoxide will lose consciousness in a matter of minutes if not seconds. If a teak surfer has become incapacitated they could slip below the water. The Coast Guard and other marine law enforcement agencies would like to remind people of the dangers associated with teak surfing. For more information contact your local marine law enforcement agency, state boating authority, Coast Guard or U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. We used to hang from the rear bumper of a car in the winter time and get
pulled through the snow before the plows went through. Called it "bumper-jacking". This was 20 years before they invented "CAR-jacking". Another version was to hang on to the ventwindow post (for those of you who remember vent windows) outside the driver's door, and "ski" through the snow. Geez, brings back memories--we really were mentally defective, but no CO poisoning ever resulted from that, to my knowledge!!! Dean ____________________________ .. "jps" wrote in message ... Dean ____________________________ The pre-1964 Volkswagen Beetles were perfect for that. Lots of kids here would hang around corners during a good snowstorm and wait for the Beetles to come along up to a stop sign. They would run up and latch on to the 'old style' bumpers. Another favorite was the old electric trollies we ran from 1949 until 1969 ish. This is the rubber tired version with the double poles that contacted the overhead wires. They had a good bumper you could ski behind, or even jump up on for a free ride. I played it safe and restricted myself to pulling those poles off the overhead wires when the driver stopped. Boy...would they get mad! |

Geez, brings back memories--we really were mentally defective, but no CO poisoning ever resulted from that, to my knowledge!!! I also have to cut stupid kids a little slack, having done a bunch of REALLY stupid things as a youth. Looking back, I could very well be dead. They seemed to make sense as good clean teenage fun at the time. This doesn't count all the very stupid drunk driving that was done. Examples: We'd ride on the top of a car holding on to the luggage rack. Country roads speeds approximately 30 - 60 mph. Actually, the holding on to the luggage rack (holding front bar with hands, bracing against rear bar with feet) wasn't all that hard. Thinking back, we used no goggles - bugs and gravel didn't occur to us as dangerous. Second stupidest thing in a car: sitting in the passenger seat, we'd roll down the window and open the triangular vent window. That would leave the vertical bar between the window and the vent. We'd hold onto that bar, open the door, and leaving our feet firmly (important!!) on the floor of the car, would swing out with the door into the full open position. We'd do this at around 20 - 40 mph, and usually do it so that someone would see us, of course. I think the stupidest thing we did in a boat was jumping the wake of a big boat with the small (12 ft) fishing boat. No big deal except one time my brother fell out of the little boat and, having no such thing as a deadman switch, it kept going. I was driving the big boat and had a hard time figuring out whether to rescue my bro. or try to catch the little boat -which fortunately, fairly quickly slowed and stopped - and more fortunetaly, didn't circle back and hit my brother. We were smart enough to always wear PFDs in the little boat - but at the time that meant a "life belt", not a vest. With his blue jeans and sweatshirt, the life belt didn't exactly save his life. His swimming lessons and adrenaline did. Now I'm about the most safety conscious person you could meet and I think my kids have ended the cycle of stupidity - they're not nearly as stupid as we were. But, my wife wonders why I seem less than totally critical of stupid things people do. I have to tell her I understand that kids just do stupid things, they don't know any better and if they're lucky and survive, they usually figure out "hey that was dumb, I shouldn't do it again." |
