Yanmar failure and reliability data

I wonder if someone has some reliably data and jurisprudence concerning
broken cam shaft on sailboat diesel engine.
I have never seen a cam shaft to snap under normal load. The cam shaft on
my 1GM Yanmar broke in two pieces. Being a drop forged casting it requires a
fantastic impact to break in two.
Unless it is from an original hair line crack at fabrication that was not
detected at the time

Wow, that's something. Yanmar makes a very reliable machine from both
personal experience and what I have read about them. Did it get over
heated?

No, it did not overheat. I was cruising at about 2000 RPM when I hear a
sudden noise. I immediately went down to 1000 RPM to reduce the sound
level. Then I went under sail.

Are you saying that it continued running with a broken camshaft? Is that
possible?
