catboat info?

I've always been fascinated by catboats, but I've not until recently
considered building one, so my knowledge of their design is limited.

What I'm wondering is, were cats like the Selina II, a 41+ footer now
chartering on the Chesapeak Bay, very common? Almost all of the catboats
I've had run-ins with were either under 20 feet, or not far over.

Is there a rule for the boat type that limits size, or is it just the
rigging and relative hull shape? I mean, they all more or less look like
eachother, but I've recently found some boats up to 30 feet or more, like
the Selina II.

I personally love the catboat lines and performance, when she's rigged and
handled just right, and if I can build one that'd comfortable hold the
future missus and our 1 to 2 prospective children, that'd be great. ;-)

Thoughts?

The bigger the boat, the bigger the sail(s). The sail on a large catboat
could be hard to handle.
