Experiences with Yanmar?

A friend is about to buy a small boat with a yanmar engine (diesel). She
wants to know if it's a good engine. However, I don;t have any experiences
with this make. Kindly gives me yours in response to this.

Great engines. Perhaps the most popular marine diesel on the market. They
are unknown in the real world because of their limited uses on land other
than in agriculture.

One of the best marine engines one can buy.
A simplified test for a used one given to me by the local Yanmar dealer is:
"does it start right away and pump only water from the exhaust port? Then
it's probably a great engine. It's hard to wear them out and the common fear
of one with over 120k hours is simple naïveté's."
Good luck.

Excellent engine. They are interesting machines in that they have no glow
plugs or any kind of ignition plug, they run on compression only. If it
starts quickly and runs evenly then it is probably in good shape. I have
read numerous accounts of people that have had them for long periods of
time without having to do anything to them except change the oil and do
routine maintenance. The Yanmar in my boat is a 2 cylinder 15 horse power
model that is 25 years old and it starts up and runs great every time I
turn the on the key. Yanmar is still in business so parts are available.
They are very fuel efficient. I sail a lot and in six months I have only
used 14 gallons of diesel and this was with some days of extensive
motoring.
