Royalex Repair
I've read the threads on Royalex repair here and still have questions.
I bought a Mad River Freedom 16 canoe from a rental recently because I wrapped it around a rock. It popped back in shape and carried us back to the car about 7 kilometers with no issues at all. There are wrap-lines here and there, and tiny holes where you can see the white stuff (the biggest is 4mm sq). The shape has generally been restored except in one side close to the end, theres an inward slight bend. (1) What kind of iron do I use to bend it back? Will a hairdryer do or do I need to take it somewhere? (2) One part of the gunwale is broke. The plastic is broken and I can see the bent metal coming through. Should I try to bend it back or just replace the gunwale, or an even better question; where can I get gunwale equipment (esp here in Toronto?) (3) How long can I go without patching the holes in the ABS? Am I allowed to go paddling in it this weekend or should the holes be fixed immediately? Thanks for answers and any other experienced advice. |

Use it this weekend. Use it while the boating is good and fix it this
winter when the water is too hard to boat in. -Richard, His Kanubic Travesty -- ================================================== ==================== Richard Hopley Winston-Salem, NC, USA .. rhopley[at]earthlink[dot]net .. 1. Forget the iron. You want to heat a larger area to reduce the overall
stresses. Put it in the sun and or turn it uupside down with an electric baseboard heater inside. Use constant force to reshape it as much as possible. Wedging a 2X4 from the opposite side works. When you say "white stuff," do you mean foam core or white abs? If the latter do nothing. 2. Replace the gunnell. 3. Over time the Royalex will delaminate in the creased areas from flexing.. At the first sign of this you will have to reinforce the inside with some form of glass and epoxy. Most recently I have used 8 oz. kevlar with Cold Cure. When you say "white
stuff," do you mean foam core or white abs? If the latter do nothing. I mean the inside foam core. It shows in small holes. I take it I'll have to get the mad river repair kit and repair it in these places, just didnt know how much longer can I delay. 2. Replace the gunnell. Where can I find gunnels from? Over time the Royalex will delaminate in the creased areas from flexing.. Can I repair before the delamination occurs? And to repair will i have to sand the creases completely so they're flat? Or can I just apply the glass and epoxy on the spot and just be done? Even better is there somewhere I can get more details on how to repair, possibly books or online sites? Thanks for the advice. I'll use my heater on the inside in the garage. |

I take it I'll have to get the mad river repair kit and repair it in these places, just didnt know how much longer can I delay. Get Scotch Weld 3532 B/A and apply as putty to small holes on the outside. Structurally repair from the inside with glass epoxy. 2. Replace the gunnell. Where can I find gunnels from? Find a boat manufacturer near wher you live. You may have to order them from Mad River. Over time the Royalex will delaminate in the creased areas from flexing.. Can I repair before the delamination occurs? Yes - be aware that this will make the boat heavier. And to repair will i have to sand the creases completely so they're flat? Or can I just apply the glass and epoxy on the spot and just be done? Just roughen the inside material, do not sand away more than necessary. After sanding, vacuum the dust do not use use any solvents. Even better is there somewhere I can get more details on how to repair, possibly books or online sites? Thanks for the advice.
