OT--Welcome to the Republican party Sen. Byrd!
 

Lately, I find it awfully hard to rip on Sen. Byrd. In a hope to get
re-elected next year, he's made a very sharp turn to the right. He's a
co-sponsor of the "Small Business Health Fairness Act" (fka--association
health plans), and is a strong supporter of placing conservative judges back
on the nation's courts.

From his memoir, "Child of the Appalachian Coalfields":

"One's life is probably in no greater danger in the jungles of deepest
Africa than in the jungles of America's large cities."

"In my judgment, much of the problem has been brought about by the
mollycoddling of criminals by some of the liberal judges who have been
placed on the nation's courts in recent years."

"The high court's share of the responsibility for our increasing lawlessness
lies in two areas -- its zeal for bringing about precipitous social change,
and its overconcern for the rights of criminals and its underconcern for the
rights and safety of society,"

Maybe he and Zell Miller can get together for drinks and figure out how to
bring the Democratic Party back into mainstream America.

Having been born and raised in West Virginia and with basically all my
family still there, I can tell you that Byrd has NO concern regarding
his re-election while he is still alive. If he dies before the next
election there is a slight chance he won't be re-elected via write-in.
If he dies before the election but after the ballots are printed he
will still win. In WV they tend to elect Senators for life. As a
Libertarian/Republican that disappoints me, but it is reality.

his re-election while he is still alive. If he dies before the next

Didn't say anything of the sort. I just found the concept of Byrd
having to do anything out of character specifically in order to get
re-elected quite humorous. And, yes, Byrd is quite conservative in
some respects and quite liberal, even socialist, in others. But
regardless of such labels he brings home the bacon (and various other
cuts of pork) to West Virginia. Most East and West coasters will not
quite be able to understand Byrd's type of liberalism as it has little
to do with big city issues, only slightly to do with racial issues,
and is rooted in depression era rural viewpoints - all of which is
quite foreign to the coasters.
