Boating Sickness Relapse

Heeeyyyyy Rec.Boaters!

I decided to pop back in and am pleasantly surprised to see a few
familiar "faces" are still hangin' out here.

I've been out of the boating scene for awhile (Gawd - Four years?!!).
Got married and am now doing the Landlubber thing (Took me d*mn near
forEVER to unload the two stinkpotters I had!).

....And I've switched from "too many boats" to "too many Harleys" (Sucks
to be me!!! ;-)

Life on Terra Firma is good, though. I'm finding I really enjoy having
things like a bona-fide BATHROOM, CLOSETS and a GARAGE - as opposed to
a shower the size of a phone-booth (w/10 gallons of hot water),
microscopic hanging lockers and my car rusting in the marina parking
lot!).

And I can run multiple appliances simultaneously!!!!

(But I *really* miss being rocked to sleep every night!)

Anyway, I'm babbling (as some of you may remember - I *do* have a
tendency to do! ;-). I found I just couldn't stay away from boating!

....And I have a soft-spot in my heart for old boats "in need of
lovin'!" So I've just adopted a 1967 Texas Tornado mono-hulled sailing
dinghy. Hull #6!!! 16'6" LOA, 5'7" beam, swing-keel with a 160'
sailplan (I think she'll be FAST!).

I've even (kinda) revived the old webpage. I've decided to post
progress on "The Restoration." This is a restoration where I hope to
remain "true" to the boat's origins - rather than my old duct-tape,
chewing gum, and globs-of-epoxy methods of repair (Necessitated, of
course, by springing a leak directly over the v-berth at midnight,
during a rainstorm)! I'll try to maintain a BoatBlog (probably not
daily, but I'll TRY).

URL: http://www.imqtpi.com/Dink.htm

If anybody out in rec.boats land has had any experience with this type
of boat, I'd welcome any advice!

And I'll probably start lurking - maybe even posting - here at
rec.boats again!

"It's good to be back!!!"

Hi Nancy...nice to see you back.
Be wary of the 'JimH gang'. They look down their noses ay any vessel
less than 30 feet.
Sure will be nice to have another 'sailor' aboard.

Don:

My "first" sailboat was a Dyer dinghy, my second, a Sailfish, but my
first "real" sailboat (mainsail and jib), was one of these beauties:

From about 11 to 15 years of age, I had barrels of fun racing one in
Long Island Sound club races for kids my age.

Those little boats are lots of fun. I took my 'White Sail' course on
420's at a naval base on our harbour back in 1984.

The 420s would have been quite exotic way back when I was attempting to
"Club race." We mostly saw Bluejays, Stars, and Lightnings. In fact
there were relatively huge fleets of these boats all over the
Connecticut side of LI Sound. My specialty was running Star sloops
aground on sandbars in Milford Harbor. The boat drew 3' or so, and I
always forgot it was a keelboat. My favorite, though, was always the
Lightning.

Flying Juniors were very popular here for small club boats in the 60's &
70's. http://www.ussailing.net/fjus/

Yeah, well, I've already done the 'over 30 feet' stint (times TWO
even!!!) - so I can probably "hold my own" with that crowd.

My boss has a 52' Hatteras (you know, cost more than what hubbie paid
for OUR HOUSE?!). I get to hear his Trials and Tribulations on a
fairly regular basis. I often tease him about how his definition of
boat-maintenance is "writing checks!"

I also gasp openly (and chuckle inwardly) when I get to hear about his
bills ($10,500 for a new dinghy davit?!! Ouch! Hate to guess what the
Helipad's gonna cost!!!)

I'm surprisingly satisfied (thus far) with my 16-foot Project. At
least I think I can safely say I haven't "bitten off more than I can
chew" with this one!

I *like* that the boat is small enough to be a "hobby" - rather than a
"chore!"

(Easy for me to say that, 'cuz I can't AFFORD a 52' Hatteras ;-)

And it'll be fun taking the dink out on our local lakes and teaching
hubbie (a Manly "More-Power" Powerboater from way back!) how to sail...

Ah...you're a breath of fresh air in a putrid bilge.

(Speaking of... Does Peggie still hang out here?!!)

Krause chased her off, as he did Madcow (I forgot her real name) and Karen
from Australia (I forget her name/handle).

Notice a trend?

Notice anything different with Harry Krause's behavior here since you left?
