Boaters World: stay away!

Ordered an item for overnight delivery (about $80 shipping) and THEY WON'T
GIVE ME THE TRACKING NUMBER. "Company policy for security reasons". WTF?
Every other online vendor I've EVER dealt with has IMMEDIATELY provided a
tracking number upon shipment.

F*ck 'em, I say. No part of the BW enterprise (Ritz Camera, Greg Norman
Collection golfwear, Fishing Only, RitzPix) is ever getting a penny from
me again.

I have always found the folks at Boaters World to be helpful and to offer
far better prices than West Marine.

Will it make any difference if the item actually shows up on an
overnight basis, as promised, and you get what you paid for?

I'd say, if the item is a No-show then it's appropriate to start
demanding a tracking number,etc.

Maybe they didn't believe you were really ObiWan Kenobi (he died didn't he),
so they didn't want to give you HIS tracking info???

The person paying for the profit and salaries is an overrated
position. Anyone who can do a better job cheaper will quickly take
the vendor's place. Paying a mark-up, like everyone else in a free
market society, doesn't make you anything special. Profit's and
salaries are a necessary evil for the survival of the demon vendor.
There's no doubt, if you could buy the product for $.05 less somewhere
else, you would. So stop whining about profits and salaries, unless
you're some damned communist.

Moronic policies like this are usually only small public symptoms of
serious internal problems at a company.

Usually there's a reason for such policies, but one sided input from
someone who doesn't like the policy rarely pinpoints the reason for
said policy. Having such a "don't give out a tracking number" policy
is certainly no proof of a "serious internal problem" as you suggest.
Actually, you making such a claim casts more doubt on your own
rationality than Boater's World's good business sense.

I'd guess the problem resulted from a customer, such as yourself,
who'e used tracking numbers to drive both Boater's World and their
shippers nutty with minute by minute bitching and whining about why
their package isn't at some depot when they, in their infinite wisdom,
think is should be.

Their policy prohibits supplying tracking numbers. Period. End of story.

More than likely, not the end of story, just the end of your input.
Yeah, the customer is still always right, but some of them are a
monumental pita.

JMO, bb

Stay tuned boys and girls, will Obi Wan Kenobi return to this forum
today to report that his package did, indeed, arrive "overnight" as
promised, or will we be left to draw our own conclusions from an
ominous silence?

Maybe the guy did it by phone and BW wouldn't give the info to who knows who
over the phone after the order was placed.

BW probably believes that the web site provides a decent security layer and
therefore makes the tracking number available to those who order on-line.

I feel like I must be missing something, here..... I have had
excellent service from BW in the past and have found their prices to
be the most affordable with respect to fishing gear.... and a few
other items... and have always been able to track my package....

Additionally, if you can provide an Order Number and Your Last Name,
they offer a tracking service on their web site and link to the UPS
and FedEx sites...

Is there more to this?

the deal here obi wan?

ObiWan Kenobi just went to another plain. And if it was ObiWan he would
already know all the needed info vis-a-vis "the Force"

I can send that statement. I have purchased MANY things over the years
from boaters world. The prices are generally cheaper with the only
exception may be a good sale from West Marine. Other than that, they
have always had the basic items that I needed and never gave me a
problem. I even purchased expensive electronics from them and never
had a problem if I had to return it.

Not the point. Once the item leaves their facility, it is in the custody
of the courier (in this case FedEx). It's not BoatersWorld's
responsibility any more.

May or may not be true. Where was the free-on-board (FOB) point? This
is where title to the item goes from the seller to you. If they ship
'FOB destination', they retain title and responsibility for the
merchandise until you get it. They are responsible for any claims
against the carrier or tracking of the shipment. If they don't give
you the number, so what? The merhcandise isn't yours until they
deliver it to you.

FOB origin means the title passes to you when they give it to the
carrier. In this case you should be allowed a traking number as the
carrier has *your* stuff.

Sounds like they shipped FOB destination and are accepting
responsibility for it until you get it.

The point I was making - had you been reading along - wasn't whether the
item would indeed arrive on time (and in fact it did). The point is
BW/Ritz's idea that they feel entitled to know the tracking number
THEMSELVES but refuse to provide it to THEIR CUSTOMER. This even though
THEY NO LONGER HAVE ANY CONTROL over the package once it leaves their
warehouse and is in FedEx's (or another carrier's) custody.

Why would their online ordering be different?
