Determine the year of an outboard
 

Hi,

I'm considering buying a 12' aluminum boat with a 7.5
horse mercury, probably about 10 - 15 years old.

The seller doesn't know the exact age of the engine
(or boat). Is there any way to tell, by examining
the engine? Is it printed on a plate somewhere?
Or, if it runs well, maybe it doesn't really matter
exactly how old it is. Still, it would be nice
to know.

Your mercury dealer can date it by the serial number.

Boat should have a serial number on the transom somewhere. The last two
numbers are the year.
The motor has a serial number on the transom bracket somewhere. Post that
number here and we can tell you the year.

71 7.5 merc from this guy.

is it always the last two numbers that are the year? Don't some builders
put month in there somewhere too???

The serial number may have the month in there somewhere but the last two
digits are always the year.
