Boating and Swimmin' Holes
 

My daughter commented that her favorite part of the day was when we set
down the lunch hook and spent about an hour just eating, swimming, and
napping.
My son commented, well he's 14 so he doesn't have much to say (until he's on
his xbox live game), that his favorite part of the day was being dragged
around on the inner tube.
JimH mentioned (in another topic) that he spent a good part of his day at a
couple of different swimming spots.
I gotta admit myself, I tend to prefer the destination with the anchor set
and the relaxing that goes along with it. I tend to see the boat as a tool
to get me somewhere while my son sees the boat as a motor on water.
I'll take the swimmin' hole with it's snacking, lunching, swimming, napping,
and relaxing over the buzzing about business anyday; of course, that's fair
weather talk.

Go for it. That is half the fun of boating.....finding a nice place to
anchor and enjoy the water. Some folks spend their anchor/drift time
fishing....others swimming.

Except for cruising to various ports, we have mostly used our boat (after
some 25 years of boat ownership we sold our last boat in 2003 for medical
reasons but will be purchasing a smaller one soon) to travel to a swimming
spot (and we do have a spot we call the swimming hole in Huron, Ohio).
When doing so we would anchor in waist high water, set a stern anchor and
enjoy the day swimming and chilling. When bringing the boat back to our
dock we would usually spend the night on it if it were a Saturday night or
when on vacation.

Some folks here are serious fishermen and use their boats only for fishing.
While we have fished off the boat in spring and fall, come warm weather we
were mainly off to the beaches or other ports for weekend or multi-day
stays.

We have boated like this with our kids since they were infants (one is now
17 and the other 20) and they say they will never forget the times we had
together as a family on the boat.

And despite the fact that we are currently without a boat, we still like to
spend our time on the water. ;-)

I enjoy being on the water and the fresh air. Cruising's fine, and so is
just sitting still, fishing or relaxing.

I just have a little dinky 15 ft open bow, but there are several things
that make for fun,,

1. Navigation toys. I have a Raytheon 1200 radar I built from junk
parts. It is fun to use the radar at night. I also run OziExplorer
on my laptop with a Delorme GPS hooked to it. I download satellite
images of the places where I boat, calibrate the images, and use them
to navigate. I like toys.

2. WaterSkiing. I am a rank novice skier. I can hardly stay up on
skies, but I like jumping the wake, I like the rumble of skiing
in the propeller wash, and it's my boat I am skiing behind, I have
learned much about how it planes, how it accelerates and so on,
because I can see my boat from 'outside my boat'.

3. Swimming/Scuba. We are downriver from a coal fired powerplant, So
the river is generally warmer than bath water. It is nice to drop
anchor and just relax with a swim, a dive, or some snacks and one
or two ice cold beers. (no, I don't boat under the influence)

Sure I wish I was the pilot of a bigger boat, but I can kill a whole
weekend on $20 in gas, and another $20 total for food and an airfill
for my scuba. Little boats give more 'fun per foot' I guess.

Having spent most of my boating life as a sailor (but having also owned
power boats), I'm of the 'boat as the destination' school. Once we are
aboard, we're there... If we go someplace, cruise, fish, ski, dive,
swim, sit on the hook, etc; that is because we want to, at that time.
Boating is one of the few aspects of my life where I can, and really try
to, just let it go as it goes...

When I do, my blood pressure drops and I get this relaxed smile on my
face. I try for that whenever I can!

Swimmin' holes are great.

Out here, it's typically the North Fork of Folsom Lake beyond the 5 MPH
bouys. Floatin' around, eating cold fried chicken and chasing it
with a Pacifico.

Then a "man overboard" jump in to 77 degree water.

Doesn't get much better than that.
