WON'T GO INTO FOWARD

My 1993 four winns with (king Cobra)I/O won't go into foward gear. It
will go into reverse. Here is what happened today. I went for a ride
in my boat, all was fine, hat flew into water, not the one that I was
wearing which is always cliped to my shirt or PDF. tried to come up
on it and get it. after a while of gently putting it in nuetral,
reverse and foward, I relized that I no longer had foward, but still
had reverse. I did get it to go into foward a couple of times, but
that did not last. Finally had SEATOW take me home as I was on my way
to work. Up until today, the boat has been running fine, although the
idle seems really low.
any one out there with any ideas? as always thanks in advance.

I recently went through the same thing. My linkage cable was rusted. Got a
new one from west marine for about 30.00.
