Old steering wheel - re-coat or replace?

Greetings,

We have an old Boston Whaler (1964 I think), which hasn't been used
much in the last few years.

Getting it ready for use earlier this year I noticed that the steering
wheel was getting my hands extremely dirty. I've come to realize that
whatever coating was on it has started coming off, and the old hard
black rubber is rubbing off on my hands.

Otherwise the wheel looks fine (no cracking detected). Is there a
coating coating I can put on the wheel to make it work for a few more
years? Otherwise I'm considering one of those steering-wheel covers
from AutoZone.

Thanks for any advice,

Rich

A clear polyurethane(spray) should do the job. UV will degrade a plastic
over the course of 41 years. If it comes out too slippery, one of the
covers from AZ might work for a year or two before needing renewal.

Is this a twin-cable type steering? It probably is... the helm should
take any A/M tapered bore wheel - I thought the Whalers had the
chrome/steel wheel in this era. What year is the registration?
