Interesting Day of "Restoration"
 

Allow me to ramble for a moment...

I've grown bored with encapsulating wood in fiberglass. Doing this in 80
degree weather is certainly different from what I was experiencing last fall
in a 50 degree barn. The other day I actually had a melt down - I ended up
throwing the plastic container of resin into my lawn when it became hot,
just to watch it smoke away for a couple minutes.

So today I needed a change of direction. Hmmm... let's check out the water
pump. It would be nice to see if the impeller needs attention, since who
knows when previous owners last checked it. So off to the boat with a
socket set and a couple wrenches.

I got the pump off without mush hassle. I open it up, and sure enough the
impeller looks like it's been run hot a few too many times. When I go to
get down off the boat... (insert naughty words here). Wouldn't you know
it - I dropped the damn thing from about six feet up. Let me tell you -
this ain't no baby boy, this thing no bouncy. Thud. (Insert a few more
naughty words, just for kicks).

Back in the garage to open it up. Little bits of a bearing come falling
out. Time to start calling the parts stores.

It's a Sherwood pump, circa 1970 for a Crusader (Interceptor?) engine. The
"major" rebuild kit costs $100. Similar Sherwood pumps cost around $200 for
a complete replacement. Not this one - the guy had me promise not to hang
up on him before he gave me the price. Retail $600. Click.

I took the thing completely apart just to make sure nothing else was
damaged. Seems I need a set of o-ring pliers to get this thingy off of
another thingy. Off to the auto store for a new tool (can you tell I'm a
newbie yet?). Back home I get the thing completely dissected, taking about
20 digital pics in the process. Looks like the "major" rebuild kit will
work. Let's home it includes a diagram.

So today was a one-step forward, three step back kind of day. How many
times do I have to explain to the Citibank rep that the suspicious activity
on my credit card is nothing to be alarmed by. No sir, nobody stole my
credit card, I'm restoring a boat. Oh... click.

yea, if banks were smart they'd have a box on any application
for loans or credit asking if you own a boat. If yes....RUN. ;)
