OB water pump impeller?

My OMC seadrive flywheel and, by extension, drive shaft rotates counter
clock wise. Between the factory manual and clymer's manuals I've got
almost enough hard information to actually be of some use.

One thing not covered relating to the installation of the water pump
impeller is which way it should cup. I've installed a new one with the
cup situated so the to of the U is towards the direction of rotation.

I get a very good flow of water from the out of the outflow pipe but the
number 3 piston ate a ring. I don't think it was from overheating
but..........

Is the installation of the impeller correct, incorrect, or, though
unlikely, doesn't it matter?

Thanks

It does matter! I think I understand your placement. (And if so, you're
correct) The outer edge should be swept back, not into the direction of
rotation.

Doesn't matter which way you install the "NEW" impeller because the first
time you crank it over it will bend back the correct way.

Thanks woodchuck. I had considered that but the darn thing fit in so
tightly I didn't know if it would be able to reverse itself if I got it
in bass akwards.

I use some the mercury 24C grease on the impeller to reduce friction when
first fired up.
