WTB: trailer hitch for 740, 760, 940, 960
I'm looking to buy a used trailer hitch for my 1990 Volvo 740 GL.
Class I or Class II (which essentially means, "any Class). I believe that the hitches for the 740, 760, 940, and 960 are identical. Located Pomona (Los Angeles County), California Cross-posted to several groups. Please, no flamers. Thanks in advance! Sue Sanchez |

I can confirm the hitches are the same, we've used the same one on our 85
740 GLE, 89 740 16-Valve GLE, and our 93 960. Wagon each time, I would assume no difference to the sedans - but get someone to confirm this for independant rear suspension models. They have one for my BMW 330i. I don't plan on trailering. I just want to use a bike rack so the little women doesn't need the "truck" for her bike trips. Sue Sanchez I had UHaul install a hitch on my car (a Honda) and thought the price & performance have been fine. |

Sue Sanchez I had UHaul install a hitch on my car (a Honda) and thought the price & performance have been fine. The one fitted to my 940 estate didn't fit correctly and the installer had 'modified' the exhaust so that it hit the suspension on fullish compression. I think it was for a 740, didn't seem to be a Volvo unit so I got rid of it since it was not much use to me anyway. -- Tony Stanley ++Always Learning++ |

U-Haul gave me an estimate of $319 for installed hitch and wiring
harness, which isn't too bad. However, my thought is that there must be old hitches out there on cars no longer being used as tow vehicles and I might get one cheap. I'll try calling junkyards next. I got their trailer hitch and it works perfectly. Class I or Class II inserts. It is custom made for Volvos and didn't require any modifications to the car. It cost a fraction of what a Volvo hitch costs. |

Go with U-Haul. The iron itself is not that big a deal, but the installation is. Cutting a hitch off an old wreck and then giving your neighbor a sixpack to weld it up for you.....and then trying to wire it properly, is a lot of work save a piddly $319. The guys at U-Haul probably aren't rocket scientists, but they do specialize in installing hitches and can probably do a better job on the 1751st hitch job than you would do on your very first. Considering the dollar value of the trailer and load, the hitch and the installation is a poor place, IMO, to economize. |

When I bought my Plymouth Voyager new, I asked the Chrysler dealer where I should get a hitch installed. he said they could do it but advised me to go across the street to U-Haul. No problems 9 years later and counting. Do it once and do it right. |
