In the middle of trying to buy a piece of property on Lake Hartwell SC.
It's caught up in a nasty divorce. Good things come to those who wait on the family court judge to rule... :) -W |

Good things come to those who wait on the family court judge to rule... :) Good luck, Clams... it a very nice lake. My wife and I and another couple spent a week up there a couple years ago in a friends lake house. There's a few shallow coves with some stumps to avoid, but plenty of room otherwise. We're on Lake Murray just 1.5 hours south of that. Our water has been almost 15 feet down for over a year while they're working on the dam (building a backup dam for the existing earthen dam), but the water will start rising this June. No problem really, with 60,000 acres to work with there's still plenty of lake to use. You should come down and check it out sometimes. Jack |

Was wondering what had happened to you. I figured you had enough
of the political trolls in this group and moved on. Glad you're back! There was a poster in here recently that had an old Merc question and when you never responded, I figured you were long gone. Welcome back and welcome to the 'South'. -Jim Clams Canino wrote: In the middle of trying to buy a piece of property on Lake Hartwell SC. It's caught up in a nasty divorce. I'm not back - yet.
We're mostly off line as we travel to get this deal together. It'll prolly be a month or two till I get back on for real. -W "Jim" wrote in message ... Was wondering what had happened to you. Yes.... All of our stuff is in storage and the PM-II is down there at
Uncles house. We're just waiting on our offer on the property to get out of the court. She accepted, he won't accept anything. The judge outta hear it this week. In the mean time I remain a wandering and homeless clam. It's quite liberating actually. :) -W All our stuff is storage and we're 2 people, a German Shepard and a Mini-Van with 260k miles on it. We dropped the boat off in SC last week at Uncles place. "Harry Krause" wrote in message ... Are you actually moving away from the land of cold, hard winters? |

Clams,
Wasn't me who had the question and since my ISP has such a low retention period, I can't find it. Hopefully this 'new' person with the old Merc will learn about the Merc dood being back. :^) Actually, I myself am getting a Merc this week. Getting an 80's Bass Tracker with a 40hp Merc. Probably way too new for you though. :^) But I'll still ask questions if I have them... -Jim Clams Canino wrote: If you still have the question , bump it for me will ya? -W |

Capt Jack R.. Right now, the hydrilla and Illinois pond weed has died back from the winter and low water levels. Last fall, they introduced sterile grass carp to eat this stuff, and they (DNR) tell us that it'll take a couple of years to really get that program going. They're trying to "sneak up" on the number needed to get it under control. Too many will destroy the cover for the good fish. Only time we get close to Doolittle (aka "Bomb") Island is to watch the Purple Martins come back to roost in the late summer evenings. It's an amazing sight, seeing tens of thousands of these birds return each night to this one island out in the middle of the lake. It turns into a big, dark cloud over and over again as they get up, fly around, and settle back down. I understand it's the only officially recognized Purple Martin refuge in North American. |

On what lake is Doolittle Island? What kinda stuff there?

"Clams Canino" wrote: On what lake is Doolittle Island? What kinda stuff there? It's a medium sixed island in the middle of Lake Murray, SC, just outside of Columbia. Strange looking, in that it is 75% bare (no trees), while the other islands on the lake are densly populated with trees. Now the island is a Purple Martin refuge. It was used in WWII for bombing practice for training the local base's B-25 crews. Doolittle's Raiders trained here, and used the island for practice as well, hence the name. Legend has it (likely true) that there is still some un-exploded ordinance around the island. There are a couple of B-25's in the lake, and one was recovered a few years ago and is in the process of being restored. My dad, who enlisted at 17 at the very end of the war, recalls the B-25s that flew training missions over this area back then. He was in the Navy, and among other things, got to fly in a PBY. Hmm... Navy, seaplanes, and lakes. Is the NG back on topic?. :-) Jack |

Jimmy Doolittle practiced for the raid on mainland Japan in WWll by dropping small bombs on this island in lake Murry. That be the famous Doolittle raid that was launched off carriers. The island is easy to spot since it has almost no large trees as I recall. People are not suppose to land there as it is a posted "Purple Martin" nesting ground. When the water is low some of the bombs are still visiable. We left Columbia about 6 years ago. At that time they had (or were going it, I am not sure) pull a Mitchell bomber that had ditched in the lake. Capt Jack R.. |
