What should it cost to have trailer painted?
 

So this past weekend we finally got the risers done on the trailer
we're making AND got the boat weight onto the trailer for the first time.

Hopefully next weekend we'll be able to finish off the trailer welding by
getting the bow-stop, fenders, spare-tire-holder, and side setps on.

Question: How much should it cost to have our trailer painted??

-- Trailer is 25 feet long.
-- All new steel but a little surface rust so will need a light sandblasting
-- They won't have to tape off / mask anything
-- I *do* want them to do a good job
-- I *do* want them to get a good covering on the underside of the trailer.
-- Color we want: Black, probably semi-glossy

I stopped by a local autobody shop for an estimate and it seemed high. The
other
two autobody shops I went to seemed pretty uninterested and did not give me
an estimate.

PS: For all those the joined in the "tongue weight" discussions...we haven't
yet weighed
to determine if our final tongue weight matches our predictions. Will wait
to do that until

Hi Gary,

Great looking rig.........

Some trailers here in CA are hot dipped galvanized for salt water.

I don't know if you can have it blasted and powder coated which is a more
serious finish than painting. The trailer is statically charged and sucks
the paint out of the air on to the metal.

You might check with a fabrication shop or heavy equipment repair shop for
advise?

Maybe it should be blasted and then use an epoxy based primer like DP40 and
then some serious marine trailer paint?

I would do some more research for a better price.

By the time you pay someone to paint the trailer, you could probably
buy/rent a spray gun and do it yourself. The same unit may also be able to
do the sandblasting. Stop in a rental store and ask some questions. They are
usually very helpful.

At least that way, you would know what paint was used and be certain that
all pertinent parts were properly covered. RichG

I made the same inquiry of a body shop several years ago when we had a
boat that was trailerable. At that time I had a EZ-Loader tandem for
a 24.5 midcabin boat. I was quoted approximately $1300. We never got
around to having the work done before we sold the rig.

How much were you quoted?

Oakland, CA. YMMV. Try Earl Shribe for painting. Or Shribe2000. They
painted my S10 pickup for about $275, included stripping the old clearcoat.

I had a trailer painted several years ago. Single axel, 18 foot boat. I
had it all stripped of everything and had brought it straight from the
sandblaster.

If I recall correctly, it cost me $800.

The problem with painting a boat trailer is that you need to get good
coverage on the top, sides and bottom. There is a tremendous amount of
overspray/waste. Unless you can stand it on edge or flip it over you have
to paint from the bottom up.

I was seriously considering buying the equipment and doing it myself, but I
figured that once I made an enclosure so that I didn't paint the neighbors
cars in the process, bought a compressor and spray gun, a set of coveralls
that would surely get covered in paint, etc. etc. I might not be much money
ahead.

Besides, it was getting to be the end of boating season and I needed to get
the boat back on the trailer.

I think if you would have tried an HVLP gun/system, the overspray and need
for a "painter's garage" would have been gone. I can't say for sure, but
the times I've used my "home handyman" HVLP, I had a lot better job result
with little or no over-spray. I've never painted a trailer, though.

Yea... I think that was one of the reasons we never got around to it.
It was a roller style instead of a bunk, and they were going to tear
it down & sandblast it. I also figured out how much 22 new rollers
were going to cost (the old ones were getting pretty shabby, about 9
years old) and decided it wasn't worth it. I ended up using a wire
brush and a can of Arctic white Rust-o-leum.

Earl Shibe! Is that company still around!? I remember it used to be
$99 for any car, and "diamond gloss" paints were another $20 or so.

Still around. Seems as if there is both Earl Shribe and Shribe2000 (or
howver earl spells his name). More expensive now. Miracle Auto Painting
used to be $39 and 3 years ago wanted $1300 to paint my S10.
