Question: Yamaha 6hp waterpump / impeller
I picked up a used 6 hp yamaha for $175 bucks. That's the good part.
It starts on 1 pull, but the water isn't coming out of the hole like it should be. When the motor is first run, ( 10 seconds ) a steady stream of water comes out, and then it stops....just blowing steam. That's the bad part. If you then kill the motor and start it back up a stream of water comes back out and then turns to steam. Any ideas guys? I don't know anything about outboards, but am willing to tinker. Thanks Mike |

Thanks Mike I would guess the water cooling pump impeller is freezing up. It may be as simple as replacing the impeller. Nice buy on the motor. How old is it? |
It's a 2000 yamaha 6hp 2 stroke. It has seen considerable salt and
looks like the guy just threw it in the truck and let it slide around. Needless to say -- 1 pull. :) So to get to the impeller, I just take the lower unit off and it will be obvious? Thanks guys. |
