I replaced the shift cable and now forward is reverse and vice versa, so

Thanks Frustrated There are 2 very similar looking styles of shift cables, and they work in opposite directions. The hydraulic shifted 1978 to '81 or '82 use a different cable than the later models that have a fully mechanical shift design. I believe the late model cable has 2 grooves on the engine end to distinguish it from the older style cable. A 1984 cable should be part number 982563. Check your stern drive model number to make sure you ordered the correct cable. If you are talking about the shift cable from the control box back to the motor, then you probably installed it in the control box incorrectly. Bill Grannis service manager |
