Default OMC Stringer,s

I just replaced the top gear unit on my right 1984 OMC out drive, now
when I turn the steering wheel my two outdrives move in opposite
directions. Is there a left drive and a right drive and if I replaced a
right drive with a left drive would this cause this problem?

Very few own those old stringer drives, and even fewer ever worked on twins.

The only difference between the drives is the steering gear and worm gear.
You bought a gearcase with the wrong gears. Take the gear and worm from your
old gearcase and use it on the new one.
