weld lower unit?
 

Does anyone here know about welding a lower unit? Basically, there's a
hairline crack at the bottom that allows oil to leak out, and I want it to
be sealed up with a weld (as I don't know any other compound that would do
the job).

The motor is an early 70's Mercury 4 cylinder. I'm not sure what its all
made of, but likely a more traditional material would be the case.

Again, I'm not looking for a strength weld, but rather a sealing weld.
Maybe a bead would do the job.

Can it be done? ( I heard they can weld props, so why not this ).

Also, if you do know anything else that may work, please let me know. I
have considered JB Weld, but haven't gotten around to try that as a sealer.

I'd try the JB Weld first - that's pretty good stuff. I had a tractor
once that I used JB weld on in the water jacket - it's still there
last time I checked.

However, if you are sure it's just a small fracture line and not
something more serious, any prop shop should be able to drop a bead on
that crack in no time.

JB Weld or epoxy will work for sealing. First, grind off the crack
surface and locate the ends of the crack. Use a magnifying glass. Drill
a 1/8" hole at each end of the crack to stop it from spreading. Don't
drill past the inner surface. Spray the crack with carb cleaner to
remove the oil. Work the sealer into the crack and holes.

Although I have no doubt JB or the other recommendations would work,
I'd just take it to a shop that specializes in aluminum welding and
have them do it. I'vd had work like this done at my local, favorite
welding and fabrication shop (but they are experienced with boats and
motors). They can not only do a definitive, permanent fix, but if you
want, can grind it smooth so if you want to re-paint as good as new,
you can. If you do a different fix and it doesn't work for some
reason, you'll just have a bigger mess to clean up before a weld can be
done.

Just make sure they're familiar with the inner workings of an outboard
L/U so they don't mess anything up. But this issue is not uncommon and
you'll find a shop familiar with it, I'm sure. - call around a bit. I

I sealed up one of these with super glue and duct tape. You have to
replace the duck tape every year though.
