New boat insurance?
I have lurked on this newsgroup for quite a while and I am about to get
my first boat, a Swee****er 20 foot pontoon. I ordered it and will take delivery in about a week or so. My family and I are extremely excited! I have some questions about insurance though. How much insurance should I carry on a new boat like this? How much do you guys pay annually for your insurance and who is it with? I just got a quote back from BoatUS and it was $1000.00 per year! That seems extremely high to me. A Progressive Direct came back at $100 per year. That seems a bit low. By the way, I have taken the USCGA/USPS boating safety course so that should save me a little. Thanks for your help! -Trent |

The policy has every bell and whistle imaginable (full replacement, liability, towing for boat in water AND trailer, in case of breakdown, beer and psych counseling if a fishing trip is interrupted because of theft or accident). I'd shop around more. Try a normal insurance agent. Mine put me with OneBeacon - perhaps their web site can direct you to an agent. |

I only valued my sailboat and trailer at 5K...so I got a rider attached to my house/car insurance. It costs me $100.00 a year. By the way, the Canadian Power & Sail Squadron has contacted an insurer who promises discounts to members who have passed courses. The more courses under your belt...the bigger the discount. |
I insure an 18' ski boat for $10,000, and it costs me around $300 / year
through Progressive. It's been awhile since I signed up with the policy, but I believe I'm paying a higher premium due to engine size (427). wrote in message oups.com... I agree, my 19' center console, 10 years old, costs over $200 a year for mid-level insurance. here was a good post here a few days ago about what to consider when shopping for insurance - things that are relevant for boats that a landlubber might not think of. -- Peter Aitken Visit my recipe and kitchen myths page at www.pgacon.com/cooking.htm -- Peter Aitken |

This is for loss/damage and $300000 liability. -- John H "All decisions are the result of binary thinking." |
I pay Progressive about $600/year for a $20K boat with full replacement
coverage. It's on the trailer at a secure marina when I'm not using it. I'm in S. FL so that has a lot to do with it, I'm sure. I would expect to pay half as much away from the "hurricane belt". Of course, with 2 cars a motorcycle, an RV, and a boat I should qualify for some kind of fleet discount! JR. |

Thanks to everyone for their replies. This is a great group.
I'm going to see if Nationwide writes boat policies in my area since they cover everything else for me and I could get a discount. So far, it looks like Progressive and BoatUS are major players that I'll be looking at. Boat US needs to come down a good bit before I'll consider them though. -Trent -Trent |
My Progressive policy has something that reduces my deductible by 25%
each year so after four years it's zero. That might be why they didn't charge you. Dan Dave Hall wrote: I pay Progressive about $130 for a $6,000 agreed value policy on my boat. This includes a muliple boat discount as I also insure my jetski. Just a little plug for Progressive. Last year I bought my first used boat (not counting jetskis or a jon boat) in late August. It was docked on the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh and the marina was paid up for the season by the prior owner so I left it docked. Along came Ivan, a near historic flood, and the marina was destroyed. My boat was found about 80 or 90 miles downstream (5 lock and dams downstream) beached where it was unreachable by land and literally broken in two. Progressive arrainged for a salvager to pull it out, paid them and paid my agreed upon value (not even charging me the deductible) with no hassle. I managed to take that boat out one time during my ownership :-( The Other Dave Hall |
You may be right. Even though I had had the boat (and its insurance)
for only a couple of weeks, I did have the jetski insured by them for a few years. I was also suprised that they paid the full agreed upon value for the boat and trailer but didn't ask for the trailer. Anyone want to buy a galvanized trailer for a 19 ft boat. I believe the weight rating is 3,200 lbs, but is does not have brakes. I put new 2x6 bunks on it and they never saw the boat. I am in Pittsburgh, Pa area. The trailer is currently in the Marietta, OH area (at Mom's house on the Ohio river).
