Darkening boat benches

I am replacing my outside cockpit benches with ones made from mahogany. I was planning to varnish
them, but sample tries show that the result is a very light, almost
blondish color. I would like to possibly stain the wood darker and then varnish over
that. Any suggestions for what stain to use?

No special stain needed. Pick a color you like and a formulation that
will be compatible with the varnish.

Use your mahogany scraps to test various stains. And if you are using
Cetol, it has some color also.
