Does anyone know how those big ocean liners are protected from lightning
strikes? same way as any other boat, they pray a lot. absolute truth is absolutely nothing is more effective than prayer. |

Most are protected through strike termination devices located high enough to provide a "zone of protection" to the ship and its occupants. These strike termination devices are bonded to grounding conductors that are connected to grounding plates in contact with the water. These systems do nothing to prevent strikes (they may actually cause more of them) but they do dramatically reduce the chances of serious injury or death. |

I figured all the antennas, and high points had grounding straps to the hull. And with a 1000' ship, there would be a huge ground plane and ground path to the water. Very low current density. Bill |

If you want to learn more, go to the NFPA website and take a look at the NFPA-780 code (Standard for the Installation of Lightning Protection Systems). The current version costs $30, but towards the bottom of the page there is a link to the current draft of the next release. I've looked at the draft and its almost identical. The watercraft section is towards the end, chapter 8. http://tinyurl.com/yqtx6 |

When there are to many aboard that do not believe in flight, the airplane crashes. |

liner from lightning. it not that it protects, but rather it protects as well as anything else. as the advertising guys would say, "Nothing protects better" [grin] |

All I did was laugh at the Wizard remark and the implication that you don't have a brain. If you don't understand the power of prayer and how that works then that is your problem. So you are an athiest? figures... |

No, but since there isn't any current brain-transplant technology then your best hope in that department is "prayer". Lots of it.... |

To the contrary, I am a person that uses their brain, figures out a solution to a problem, as opposed to asking a (insert favorite icon here) to do it. By the way, there are many, many religions older, and with more written material than christianity. |
