redoing upholstery

I am going to make some new cushions for the front of my open bow runabout.
I got rot resistant thread and marine fabric and stainless steel staples.
What I'm curious about is how the back rest ones are usually attached to the
boat? Velcro? snaps? Hooks?

Any one have any ideas. Years ago I screwed them in and made button snaps
to cover the screw head. Those rusted and the fabric tore where the
screw/buttons pulled down.

Thanks,
MikeG

Mine have bolts in the cushion board that go into the boats fiberglass. Then
inside the fiberglass area there is a piece of wood for a washer and nut
holding it on.

Same here, more or less. Mine have a blind nut (like this:

side of the cushion's backing board with a machine screw going through it
from inside the padded side. The end of the screw serves as a stud to go
through the fiberglass. There's no backing board behind the fiberglass on
mine, just a fender washer and nut.

If you use a T nut, and you use the boat in salt water, you might consider
using a stainless steel T nut. They have them at West Marine. Expensive, but
at least you won't get rust running down the padding.

Good suggestion. Mine are not stainless (stainful?) and are quite rusty by
now.
