Renting Pontoon Boat Trailer?? WTR
 

Hi All,
I've got a 22ft. Sun Catcher pontoon boat that I need to pull out of
the water for a day or two. I keep getting the runaround from local
marinas regarding this since I will be performing my own work on the
boat....

What I'd like to do is rent a trailer from a company or individual for
a day or two. Does anyone know of a place or person that could
accommodate my needs?

I am located in Acworth, Georgia near Lake Allatoona.

My first thought is that maybe you could work a deal with someone who has a
similar boat that they trailer to the lake....

You have a boat in the water, presumably in a slip. You want your boat out
and on the hard for a couple of days. Someone else would have a similar boat
that they keep on a trailer, and they would want the boat in the water a
couple of days. Make a trade! Let them use your slip while you use their
trailer.


I might also try hanging around the launch ramp until a similar boat was
launching, then try to make a deal with the guy. If he wasn't interested in
overnight, he might be willing to let your boat sit on his trailer while he
was out on the lake.

You could also try going to the dealer where you bought the boat and see if
they might be able to do something about renting you a trailer.

A lot of people who keep their boats in the water have a trailer that is
rusting away some place. If there are any other boats like yours in the
marina try contacting the owners and see if they have trailer you could use.

With a pontoon boat all you really need is a flatbed trailer, Try a
local equipment rental dealer. UD

Right. An eight foot wide flatbed trailer rental with a winch. I see those
every day. Getting it off will require half of your tow vehicle to be in the
water. Go for plan "A" that Rod proposed...

Here's what NOT to say (actual conversation)

Friend: Hey,don't you still have you're old 24' Seabird?

Friend: I need to pull mine out of the water for a couple of days. Can

Me: I thought you just bought a trailer.

Friend: I did. But I'm having my bottom done and I don't want paint
slopped all over it. It's brand new.

Needless to say, that was the end of THAT conversation! LoL!
I would have gladly pulled his boat out, helped him get it OFF my
trailer and on to jack stands. Then come back later to put it back on
the trailer and back in the water, no charge. But no way was I going
to just "loan" him my trailer LoL!

Point being, finding a trailer is one thing. Borrowing it is something
else entirely. Be prepared to explain exactly why you need it, where
it's going and how it'll be treated.

And by the way, why DO you need to pull your boat?

The equipment rental dealer is not going to be very happy that you dunked
his trailer in the water, unless he equipped it with water proof lights and
had bearing buddies.

I am not sure where you would get one wide enough. The beam on the Sun
Catcher is 8'6", the full legal limit. That beam is to the pontoons, so you
would need a flatbed trailer that had the bed extent the full legal limit so
that the pontoons would rest on the bed of the trailer. This would require
that the bed be built over the top of the wheels, since the wheels would not
be able to extend past the bed and still be a legal width. This puts the
bed of the trailer fairly high, which requires the trailer to be backed
pretty deep into the water, which creates issues for the water tightness of
lights and axels plus could be an issue with the tow vehicle getting it in
that far.

If you could find a suitable trailer to rent, there is still the issue of it
being suitable for dunking in the water.

Rod,
You made a few good points, but the pontoon boat trailers I've seen do
have the bed over the wheels, as far as bearing buddies go, all I can
say is my 83 caulkins whaler trailer, and my 71 Correct Craft SN trailer
have done just fine without them. Although the CC trailer has only seen
fresh water, Then again I do maintain all my own equipment. UD

In our area (Lake Orion, MI) some people advertise that they will move yur
pontoon boat from your yard to the water (Or vice-versa) in the spring or Fall.
They look at this as a way to pick up some extra cash. Check local papers or
marinas, etc.

I have seen several different types. For a pontoon boat that is less than
the legal width, sitting the pontoons on runners inside the wheel wells is
possible. Such an example is he

Because the wheels are outside of the pontoons either the boat has to be
less than legal width or the trailer has to be oversize, which would make
renting at a utility yard unlikely.


Most of the trailers I see for the full legal width boats support the boat
under the floor/deck and have the wheels inside the pontoons. Such a
